Glitter and Gilded Glamour is finally back!
After months of planning and hours of fitting, hair and makeup, the first Monday in May finally arrived and it’s time to dissect the 2022 Met Gala red carpet. This year’s theme was “Gilded Glamour,” which featured plenty of celebrities wearing luxury, extravagant and glamorous pieces of clothing and haute couture dresses designed by a long list of worldwide known fashion houses. The theme evokes visions of New York’s golden age between 1870 and 1890 when it was flush with newfound fortunes.
What does “Gilded Glamour” mean?
Well, there are lots of rooms for interpretation. The Gilded Glamour was a period in time of excess for those who were capable of excess — the rich who shamelessly overstepped the top in every aspect of their lives, especially with what they wore. It was a time for “new money”, “old money” and the excitement and passion for technology and the future.
Many celebrities stuck to the dress code, with outfits that harked back to the 19th century, such as Billie Eilish, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Kim Kardashian, among others celebs.
Check out some artists who perfectly portray the on-theme during the gala event.
Billie Eilish stole the red carpet wearing a custom Gucci ‘fit complete with a corset, seafoam green lace sleeves, and a cream-coloured train. Although this was only her second Met Gala appearance, she managed to snag the crown for fashion’s biggest night.
BLAKE LIVELY & RYAN REYNOLDS
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, who have been married for nearly 10 years, were Met Gala co-chairs. They were not only the best-dressed couple at the event, but also seemingly the happiest. Lively wore a crown with a strapless custom Atelier Versace dress, featuring pink bow-like detailing with pink opera gloves. Reynolds complemented her in a black tuxedo.
Kim Kardashian channelled old Hollywood, wearing the same dress Marilyn Monroe wore in 1962 during her performance of “Happy Birthday” for then-President John F. Kennedy.
Gwen Stefani turned heads in this stunning lime green Vera Wang combo, which featured a bra top with a ruffled skirt and matching gloves.
Lizzo looked amazing in this black and gold Thom Browne creation.
SOPHIE TURNER AND JOE JONAS
Sophie Turner highlighted her baby bump in a floor-length black Louis Vuitton dress that had fishnet-style cut-out detailing across the shoulders and stomach. Joe Jonas added a quirky touch to this white Louis Vuitton tailcoat, which extended from the back to the floor.
Alexa Chang looked elegant in this silky white dress with delicate draping by Christian Siriano and Maison Boucheron’s jewellery.
