Shaped and styles from Fendi felt like a celebration or a Studio 54 party, in the spirit of Lopez and the women he used to draw inspiration from such as Jerry Hall, Tina Chow, Pat Cleveland, Bianca Jagger, Grace Jones.
With this Fendi Spring/Summer 2022 collection, Kim Jones came back to the stage after some seasons without live shows. The fashion designer Kim Jones presented his first season back on the opening day of Milan Fashion Week with a disco-inspired runway. The event conjured up glittering disco balls, writhing bodies and a vibrating bass. Moreover, it took place under archways reminiscent of the Roman house, the Palazzo Della Civiltà and, between columns made of mirror, the scene was unmistakably Fendi, played to a disco beat. This Spring/Summer collection brought plenty of muted colours and chic trouser suits. The brand could also match the joyful mood of the disco era with a modern attitude to the designs down the catwalk, highlighting the female beauty and confidence.
Artistic director Kim Jones was inspired by Antonio Lopez hand-drawn Fendi logo found in the archives. “Lopez was a friend of Karl Lagerfeld and, he has always been someone who inspired me,” Jones said in the show’s notes. Moreover, Kim Jones incorporated the artist’s abstract and colourful designs into the garments and accessories.
The show started with tailored suits and exaggerated lapels paired with wide-leg pants, accompanied by flowing flower child-era kaftans. As the show progressed, funky upbeat music was setting the tone and, more palette colours were introduced, such as pale pinks and mustard yellows in fur coats and satin suits with matching bra tops. Moreover, dark and brown palette colours hugged body hugging.
The atmosphere was pure 1970s disco, with a Diana Ross and Chic soundtrack and looks and reminiscent attitudes of Grace Jones and Jerry Hall. Moreover, there were white silhouettes, even wide-leg suits, in which the designs of renowned fashion illustrator Antonio López gradually invaded the collection.
Kim Jones could perfectly and beautifully balance the signature Fendi style codes with a powerful vision of modernity. “Our woman has let loose a bit – she’s going out, dressing up. We’ve all been locked away for so long that’s what we all need right now.” Kim Jones said.
