On Monday, May 1st, one of the most important red-carpet fashion events will arrive with another unforgettable gala ceremony. The MET Gala, as it is popularly known, is actually called the Costume Institute Gala, a fundraising event dedicated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City, where designers give free rein to their imagination to create the most iconic outfits for the stars that will parade on the most influential red carpet of the fashion system. Celebrities, who have been chosen by Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, will gather at the prestigious museum located on New York’s Upper East Side, where they will wear the most spectacular outfits, and the most intimate and emotional confessions and open-ups during their arrival.

The Met Gala was founded in 1948 to raise money for the then-newly-founded Costume Institute and mark the opening of its annual exhibition. The first Met Gala was held as a midnight dinner with tickets priced at fifty dollars each. Today it is a world-famous event and one of the most anticipated each year.

Being only one week away from the most iconic night in the fashion world, here’s what we know about this year’s Met Gala so far.

WHEN IS THE 2023 MET GALA?

The 2023 Costume Institute’s annual benefit event, better known as the Met Gala, will take place on May 1, 2023 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Live coverage of the red carpet usually begins around 6 p. m. EST.

WHAT IS THE 2023 MET GALA THEME?

Karl Lagerfeld

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is preparing to roll out the red carpet for a new edition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute dedicated to the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, under a dress code that prescribes “In Honor of Karl,” coinciding with an exhibition in his honour at the Met Museum called Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, which opens on May 5 and will be on display through July 16.

The German designer – who served as creative director of brands such as Chanel and Fendi – dressed many of the celebrities who have walked the Met Gala red carpet over the years, just as he attended this important fashion event.

“Most of the approximately 150 pieces on display will be accompanied by Lagerfeld’s sketches, which highlight his complex creative process and collaborative relationships with his premiers or head seamstresses. Lagerfeld’s fluid lines united his designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and his namesake brand, Karl Lagerfeld, creating a diverse and prolific body of work unprecedented in the history of fashion,” explained the museum.

The Metropolitan Museum’s chief curator, Andrew Bolton, said he was inspired by listening to Lagerfeld’s design assistants, or the “hidden hands behind Karl’s brilliance,” as he put it, to pay tribute to him at a memorial service.

As such, the Met Gala dress code is simply “in honour of Karl,” leaving the interpretation open to guests.

WHO IS ATTENDING THE 2023 MET GALA?

On January 18, the Met announced that the evening’s co-hosts will include Spanish actress Penelope Cruz (the first representative from Spain to participate in that role) along with Roger Federer, Dua Lipa and Michaela Coel, who will serve as grand co-hosts along with their organizer, iconic fashion editor Anna Wintour.

In addition to the co-hosts, you can expect the stalwarts, of course: stars like Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, Zendaya, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, the Hadid sisters, the Biebers, Zoë Kravitz, Billie Eilish and, if we’re lucky, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, among many, many others. But there is still no official confirmation of their attendance.
