Chloé Magazine: Can you take us back to the beginning of your acting journey? What inspired you to pursue a career in acting?
Laura Osma: I started my career at a very young age with school plays and short films. But I didn’t see it as a career. In fact, I wanted to be a lawyer at some point. My mother, being a TV producer, encouraged me to audition for a series, and I got the part. Since then, being on set changed everything for me because I saw a whole new world that I fell in love with.
C: You’ve had a diverse range of roles throughout your career. Which character has been the most challenging for you to work on, and why?
L: Recently, I made a movie that hasn’t been released yet, “Pimpinero,” for Amazon. My character is Diana. I can’t talk much about it yet, but it was very challenging and a great opportunity to work with actors I admire a lot, especially Andy Baiz, one of the directors I always wanted to work with.
C: How do you prepare for a role like the one you play in “Blocco 181”? Do you have any specific rituals or methods?
L: I believe each character comes with its own challenge. For me, the most challenging was acting in Italian, especially because I didn’t speak the language. I had to be very focused. I also had to switch languages all the time. On set, I spoke English, with the other actors and the crew in Italian, and with the Latin team in Spanish. So, it was a significant preparation because I had to think a lot and do it well.
C: What has been your favourite scene to shoot in the second season, and why?
L: I think of a final sequence we had with the guys. It was quite funny to do. Action scenes are very boring, but bring very funny moments.
C: How has your character evolved from the first season to the second season of “Blocco 181”?
L: Uh! Bea is a girl who in the first season feels very happy, very light-hearted, pursuing her dreams. In the second season, we see that life is not like that. That there is a weight to wanting to achieve them and a sacrifice. That some things will be gone forever, and that also brings a lot of pain. Family pressures, etc. She realizes that life is not as rock ‘n’ roll as she thought.
C: The second season of “Blocco 181” has been eagerly awaited. What can fans expect from your character’s arc this season?
L: They can’t expect anything because even I couldn’t imagine everything that was going to happen. The only thing I could say is that we will see Bea on the verge of a nervous breakdown hahaha.
C: Can you give us a hint about any upcoming developments or twists in the new season of “Blocco 181”?
L: I would tell them that there is love for everyone.
C: “Blocco 181” has gained a reputation for its intense and emotional scenes. How do you prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for those moments?
L: Having oatmeal for breakfast in the mornings. Hahaha. I think it’s in knowing the lines and allowing oneself to always play and be open. Seeing the other. Really seeing them. Actors focus a lot on the result, we focus a lot on the result, but when we see the other, like in real life, that’s when we are moved.
C: What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned from working on “Blocco 181”?
L: That my home is a temple for creation and that I shouldn’t let everyone in.
C: How do you stay motivated and inspired in such a competitive industry?
L: It’s funny that you ask me… a few days ago, I was thinking exactly the same thing. How to stay motivated. Obviously, there are moments when I get discouraged… there’s a lot of uncertainty in this industry and competition. I’m not a girl who likes to compete much because when there’s competition, there’s comparison. And as actors, we already have enough of that daily. It harms us as human beings. I suppose not seeing my work as my only goal has been very helpful. Living life. Because deep down, what I do is give life to other people, but I always have to return to my own, and mine has to be important.
C: Are there any particular themes or messages in “Blocco 181” that resonate with you personally?
L: I would say Bea’s resilience.
C: “Blocco 181” has been praised for its authenticity. How important is authenticity to you as an actress?
L: Authenticity is key. Hard to believe. But I think an actor has their own way of approaching their work, their style. But it’s not something sought. You can’t create or generate authenticity. It’s innate. It’s more about not hiding it.
C: What do you think sets “Blocco 181” apart from other shows in the same genre?
L: That it’s a combination of many things. There’s a bit of everything. And that keeps it very interesting. That it’s novel and addresses current immigration issues in a fictionalized way but at least there’s recognition.
C: “Blocco 181” tackles some complex societal issues. How do you think the show contributes to important conversations about these topics?
L: Well, as I was saying earlier, it’s one of the series that talks about us as immigrants. And that’s in some way something very beautiful. We were always used to being the secondary story, something that isn’t known. Now we become protagonists because more and more in real life we see that we have an important social weight in Europe.
C: The show has a strong following internationally. What has been the most surprising reaction you’ve received from fans?
L: That I’ve been recognized in the most remote places in Europe. Once in the middle of a village in Germany, for example, hahaha.
C: Working on a series like “Blocco 181” must have its own challenges. What has been the most rewarding aspect of being a part of this project?
L: What more gift than having the opportunity to live in Europe and learn a language thanks to my work.
C: Apart from acting, what are some of your other passions or hobbies?
L: Well, I love reading, running for sport, and recently I started pursuing my childhood dream of learning to surf. I like traveling, meeting people, experiencing life, and cultures. I realize more and more that I’m happier with the small things in life. Listening, if it could be considered a hobby, I’d include it too. I like listening to people’s lives and their stories more than giving them a response to what they tell me. That’s where I see everything that happens to a human being.
C: How do you balance your personal life with your demanding schedule as an actress?
L: Hahahaha. It’s a question I ask myself every day. Recently, I started incorporating meditation into my daily routine so I don’t lose my temper before noon. Hahaha, I suppose always laughing at everything and being willing to understand that everything can change in a second. You go to sleep thinking something is going to happen, and the next day everything has changed. That’s life.
C: Are there any particular directors or actors you dream of collaborating with in the future?
L: I would love to work with Wong Kar-wai, Tarantino, Sorrentino, Laura Mora, many.
C: What advice would you give to aspiring actors who are just starting their careers?
L: That it’s a very long journey and to live, live a lot. Not to stay locked up just doing every acting course, which is important, yes, but the most important thing is to live. That way, they also nourish themselves with life.
C: What has been the most surprising aspect of your journey as an actress so far?
L: That people trust me. It’s a great responsibility.
C: Lastly, what legacy do you hope to leave behind through your work as an actress?
L: That we are human. Whether we like it or not. And that everything we have inside is divine.
